Moldova

Picture
Not in the story-mood? Scroll down for the Quick Budget Fact Overview: an itemized information summary of Moldova! ↓

For years, Moldova sat quietly in the blind spot of my European adventures. I’d zigzagged multiple times across the Balkans, hiked straight through the Baltics, hitchhiked the entirety of Eastern Europe, and even managed to slip into Ukraine between wars and border checks… yet somehow, I’d never made it here. Which is almost impressive, considering Moldova sits right in the middle of all that. I’m not alone in this experience though: Moldova is Europe’s least-visited country, tucked between Romania and Ukraine like a secret that everyone forgot to tell. Historically, this patch of land has seen more flag changes than Eurovision entrants: a bit of Ottoman spice, a touch of Russian frost, a generous Soviet marinade, and finally a dash of independence in 1991. The result? A country that feels suspended between worlds. Slavic but Latin, rural but European, quietly stubborn in its own soft-spoken way and with even some autonomous regions added to the mix (Transnistria / Pridnestrovie). Moldova doesn’t shout for your attention, and neither do their citizens.

I decided it was time. No more skipping the quiet kid at the back of the European class, I was going to dedicate 3 weeks of my life to it. I packed my bag, crossed over from Romania (which, on the contrary, I have visited 4 times now) and let the country unfold stop by stop: Balti, Orhei, Old Orhei, Chisinau, and the far southern wetlands of Prutul de Jos. What I found was a land of quiet charm, post-Soviet oddities, endless parks, and the world’s biggest wine cellars (Moldova’s only claim to fame).

This is Moldova: unpolished, unpretentious, and potentially worth that long-overdue visit. I’m not here to romanticize it , just to remind you that overlooked doesn’t mean undeserving. So go on, have a look, I’ll help you with some suggestions:

Balti

Balti (or “Baltshhh,” as locals lovingly hiss it out). My first stop in Moldova, and as such my first real connection with, and impression of, the country. Getting here from Romania was almost suspiciously easy: a bus that actually left on time, a quick, painless border crossing, and before I knew it I was rolling into a quiet post-Soviet cityscape of wide boulevards, peeling pastel facades, and people who seem to have collectively agreed not to hurry. Balti doesn’t demand your attention and I appreciate that. It just lets you be. Because of that, I stayed multiple days, doing gloriously little: drinking coffee on the main square, wandering through Central Park “Ștefan cel Mare,” and watching old men play chess with the kind of intensity usually reserved for political coups. There’s a gentle rhythm to the city: leafy streets, relaxed pedestrians and life going its merry way.
Architecturally, Balti is a mixed bag, but that’s half the fun. There are two particularly curious churches: one in the centre, whose strange modernist design looks like someone misread the blueprints for a rocket silo; and another further out, near the Django Bar (a bizarre cowboy-themed hangout), that resembles a Disney castle dropped into Soviet suburbia. Both are worth the walk, if only for the sheer what-is-happening-here factor. If you want to add a sprinkle of “culture,” pop into the Balti History & Ethnography Museum or the Pinacoteca “Antiochus Cantemir” Art Gallery (if they’re open), and if you time it right, catch a performance at the theatre, a relic of Soviet grandeur still thriving in slow-motion Moldova. Balti might not be a showstopper, but that’s exactly its charm. It’s peaceful, a little weird, utterly unbothered by tourism and somehow, that makes it the perfect welcome to Moldova. At least, for people like me.

Orhei & Old Orhei

Let’s start with some crucial piece of information, as this might not be entirely clear to everyone: There are two Orhei’s, which are two separate destinations, but both into the same direction. Orhei itself is a modern Moldovan city, about an hour north of Chisinau. It’s orderly, leafy, and surprisingly pleasant for a stop most travelers skip. I wandered through its tidy parks, lively squares, and along the lakeside promenade where locals fish or sit with ice cream. The Château Vartely Winery crowns a hill above town. It’s a sweaty climb up, but worth it for the panorama… and the flavor bouquets! The winery was closed when I got there, though the gift shop still poured a “taste” of what I’d missed, while the terrace offered views for days. Down below, Orheiland bills itself as the country’s biggest amusement park. Though true, expect more of a provincial fairground rather than a full-blown Disneyland. Besides that, Orhei offers a market, the St. Dumitru Church, and a few small local museums that paint a picture of everyday Moldovan life rather than history-book grandeur.
A separate world altogether lies about 15 km away: Old Orhei (Orheiul Vechi), Moldova’s open-air museum and only national park. Getting there with public transit isn’t straightforward: minibuses run only in the morning and early afternoon, so I missed it the first time and had to return another day. The site sits in a dramatic loop of the Raut River, carved through limestone cliffs. It’s a blend of archaeology and wilderness: cave monasteries dug by 13th-century monks, traces of Dacian and Golden Horde settlements, and hillsides draped in steppe grass and wildflowers. The park was established to protect both its cultural heritage and its delicate riverbank ecosystems. You’ll find willow and poplar groves, meadows full of orchids and thyme, and wildlife like herons, foxes, and even the occasional wild boar. The area is crisscrossed by walking paths between the villages of Butuceni, Trebujeni, and Furceni, where traditional homes painted mint-green or cornflower blue add another layer of charm. It’s the country’s most popular attraction (especially for Moldovans) but to me, the Prutul de Jos Reserve (keep reading) still felt wilder, quieter, and more genuinely natural. I’d still recommend it though!

Chisinau

Chisinau surprised me. After days of quiet countryside, rolling fields, and villages where the most exciting event is someone bringing fresh bread, the capital felt… alive. European in a way I wasn’t expecting: quaint architecture, wide clean avenues, bustling parks, cafés spilling onto sidewalks, and enough history everywhere you turn that you forget you’re in what many call a “hidden country.”

Sightseeing in Chisinau is modest, which is in line with the rest of the country. There’s enough to keep you curious for a couple of days, but not enough to wear you out. At the city’s heart lies Stephen the Great Central Park, where retirees claim benches like daily thrones, surrounded by chess players and pigeons that clearly run the place. Just across the street, the Cathedral Park unfolds with its gleaming Nativity Cathedral and the proud Triumphal Arch facing the Great National Assembly Square, the symbolic center of Moldovan independence. The nearby Alley of Classics lines up bronze busts of national poets and heroes, a quiet nod to culture and resilience. Elsewhere, the Monument to the Victims of the Soviet Occupation adds a somber counterpoint, while the Botanica District surprises with bursts of street art and murals. Museums are few but worth a wander: the National Museum of History (free on the last Thursday of each month if you’re clever about timing), the National Art Museum (I loved that one) and the Ethnography & Natural History Museum, whose taxidermy collection and old-world displays are oddly captivating. When you’ve seen the sights, which doesn’t take too long, Chisinau’s true charm lies in its parks. Valea Morilor Park, with its lake loops and hillside trails, is the city’s green lungs, while Dendrarium Park offers shady alleys perfect for lazy afternoons. Also the Valley of Roses (Valea Trandafirilor) adds a splash of color to the city’s gentle rhythm. And when evening falls, the National Opera and Philharmonic bring a taste of grandeur to Moldova’s otherwise modest capital.
What makes Chisinau especially enchanting for someone who cares deeply about wine (yes, that’s me) is how many vineyards surround it. Milesti Miici is the big name: home to the world’s largest wine cellar, with over 20km (!!!) of underground tunnels filled with barrels and bottles. Founded during Soviet times, but restored and expanded in the post-independence era, it’s a testament to how deeply wine is woven into Moldova’s identity. Moldovan wine-making started centuries ago, ripening vines along the riverbanks, trading wine in Ottoman and Russian times, combining folk methods with more modern techniques. Today, vineyards everywhere are renewing old vines, investing in terroir, and producing wines that are beginning to turn heads internationally. Besides Milesti Miici, which is a must-see, there’s Cricova, with its famed bubble-wines and equally famous subterranean wine labyrinths. Asconi is more rustic but full of charm, where tasting rooms and outdoor terraces invite you to linger. Purcari is a name that whispers “prestige” if only because you've seen it on so many wine labels by now; their reds are lush, often full-bodied (jeej!), with just enough oak and history. These names become part of your palate even before your first sip.

Prut Natural Reserve (Prutul de Jos)

My last Moldova stop was gloriously accidental. I just wanted to see “one more part of the country”, preferably south. I hopped on a random bus with no plan, the first one I saw was about to leave the bus station, and drove until I saw a tiny lake icon on the map around a place called Slobozia Mare. The village itself had nothing much… one winery (closed when I arrived), no proper restaurants, and a proud little burger joint that microwaved my “grill” meal right in front of me. Ok. Lake Beleu, though, blew me right off my socks.

The water opens like a secret: shallow, reed-rimmed… a patchwork of islands and marsh. Beleu is the heart of the Prutul de Jos Reserve, a relic of the ancient Danube lagoon systems formed by old marine transgressions and the shifting floodplain of the Prut river. It’s big for a country as small as Moldova (several kilometres long, shallow and changeable), and it breathes with the seasons: floods refill channels, summers shrink edges, and everything seems to live in a rhythm of rise and fall. The life here is loud if you listen. Birdlife is the headline act: tens if not hundreds of species, and whole colonies at times. Apparently I was surrounded by herons, egrets, cormorants, terns, gulls, huge flocks of ducks and geese, and even the occasional pelican. It’s an Important Bird Area and a Ramsar-listed (yeah I don’t know what that is either, but it sounds important) wetland for a reason. Fish are abundant too, including bream, carp, perch and the rest, and the lakes act as nursery grounds when the Prut floods. The reedbeds and willow fringes host amphibians and water mammals; European mink and otter turn up in survey lists, and marshy plants like white water lily, floating fern and marsh grasses stitch the landscape together. Lots of information, I know. All just to convince you that it’s worth it.
Because the reserve hugs the border, it has that slightly tense feel. I saw patrol officers on the lookout points, flying drones overhead… so before I proactively tossed my tent down I politely asked for permission to wild camp. No drama: After they glanced at my passport, I was told where it was safe to pitch. The night view from my tent was flawless: an open, mirrored horizon, reed silhouettes, and the odd call of a night bird… but it came with a price. Mosquitoes in the Beleu reedbeds are ferocious. Consider a proper net and plenty of repellent unless you want to become part of the ecosystem. Yet, it was the best imaginable final image to close the Moldova album with… sitting on the lake edge at dusk, the sky going a grey-purple, pelicans ghosting low, reeds swinging in the breath of evening, and a distant patrol light blinking quietly. The exact kind of place you stumble into when you let maps and schedules go.

Budget Bites

  • Main Supermarket Chains: Magnum, Small, Ramstore, Galmart, Kerek.
  • Local Dishes: Mamaliga (national dish: cornmeal porridge served with cheese, sour cream & meat stew), Sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), Zeama (chicken noodle soup), Placinta (fried/baked pastry filled with cheese, potatoes, cabbage or cherries), Mititei / Mici (grilled minced meat rolls), Tochitura (pork stew with polenta & egg), Friptura (grilled/roasted meat), Racitura (meat jelly), Ghiveci (vegetable stew), Borș Moldovenesc (soup with fermented wheat bran), Chiftele (meatballs), Parjoale (pan-fried patties), Pomușoare Cu Smantana (berries with sour cream), Gogoși (sweet fried doughnuts), Cozonac (sweet braided bread with walnut filling), Prune Umplute (stuffed prunes with nuts or cream), Cașcaval Pane (fried cheese), Branza de Oaie (sheep cheese), Muraturi (pickled vegetables).
  • The Veg Situation: Moldovan cuisine leans heavily on meat, especially pork, chicken, and beef, but there are plenty of hearty vegetarian options if you ask for them. Look for: Sarmale with mushrooms or vegetable filling, Mamaliga, Placinta Cu Branza or Cu Dovleac (cheese or pumpkin pastries), Zeama without meat (traditional chicken soup can be made veggie), Salata De Vinete (eggplant salad), Salata De Rosii Si Castraveti (tomato & cucumber salad), fresh bread, seasonal fruits, and roasted vegetables. Chisinau and other larger cities are gradually adding vegan/vegetarian cafés — check HappyCow Moldova for current listings.
  • National Drink: Wine. Then a whole time nothing, then comes Beer: local brands like Chisinau and Bucuria are widely available. Also: Black/Green Tea, Compot, Kefir/Ayran-style fermented drinks.

Sleep Cheap

  • Hostels / Hotels / Guesthouses: Moldova’s accommodation scene is small but steadily improving, with prices still very affordable by European standards, though not dirt cheap. Most affordable accommodations are privately owned, with listings on booking engines or Air BnB. In these cases, communication is often complicated, as English is generally not spoken (only Romanian and Russian) and without phone data a privately arranged check-in is a challenge. It also happened rather often that I booked a privately owned accommodation and it turned out not to be available, upon which another place at another location is offered, without information or new photos provided,. Overall, a tiring process.  Cash is preferred almost everywhere. Writer’s choice: Balti – private accommodation. Chisinau - private accommodation. Orhei and Old Orhei reached on day trips. Prut Nature Reserve – wild camping.
  • Couchsurfing: Moldova has a modest but active Couchsurfing community, especially in Chisinau where locals are known for their warmth and curiosity toward travelers. Hosts often go out of their way to show you around, introduce you to Moldovan wine, or cook a traditional meal. Personalized requests get far better responses than generic ones, and references matter more than verification. In smaller towns, hosts are fewer but often very genuine and eager to connect. Cyclists can also check Warm Showers, which has a small yet growing Moldovan network.
  • Wild Camping: Wild camping in Moldova is generally tolerated and easy, especially in rural or natural areas like Orheiul Vechi, Codru Forest, or around lakes and rivers. There are no strict laws against it, as long as you stay respectful of private property and leave no trace. Avoid setting up near villages or farmland without asking first: locals are friendly and often curious, sometimes even offering fruit, wine, or a place to camp near their home. Bears aren’t a concern here, but mosquitoes can be relentless near water. Keep your passport handy when camping near the borders with Ukraine or Romania, as patrols occasionally pass by. Overall, it’s a peaceful and safe country to pitch your tent... and you might just be invited for homemade wine before you even finish setting up.

  • Safety: Moldova is generally safe and welcoming, with low violent crime and a relaxed atmosphere even in its capital, Chisinau. Petty theft can occur in crowded areas or on public transport, so keep an eye on your belongings. Police presence is moderate and usually polite, though roadside checks can happen: carrying a copy or photo of your passport is wise. Avoid photographing government or military buildings to stay out of trouble. Drones are legal for personal use but can’t be flown near airports, borders, or official institutions.
  • Tap Water: Technically safe in Chisinau and most major towns, but locals rarely drink it straight from the tap due to its heavy mineral content and aging pipes. Bottled water is cheap and widely available, especially the 5-10l bottles. In rural areas, it’s best to stick to filtered or bottled water entirely, as wells and springs are have recently reported to contain health hazards.
  • Money: Moldova is still largely cash-based, especially outside Chisinau. Credit cards are accepted in supermarkets, hotels, and higher-end restaurants, but markets, small cafés, and transport often require cash. ATMs are easy to find in cities, with Maib, Victoriabank, and Moldindconbank being the most reliable for foreign cards. Currency exchange offices are common and safe to use, though it’s best to avoid airport rates. The local currency is the Moldovan Leu (MDL). Wise and Revolut both work well, but they do not offer this currency. Please note that in Transnistria they have a completely different currency and foreign cards do not work here (you’ll have to bring enough cash to exchange!).
  • SIM Cards: Very easy and cheap to get. Moldova has solid mobile coverage, even in rural areas. The main providers are Orange, Moldcell, and Unite. All offer affordable prepaid SIMs with generous data bundles. You’ll need your passport for purchase and registration. Shops are common in every town, and staff will usually help set up the SIM on the spot. Avoid airport kiosks, as they often charge higher rates.
  • Maps: Google Maps works reliably across Moldova, including small towns and villages. Maps.me is a good offline backup, especially for hiking routes or rural areas with spotty signal. Yandex Maps also covers urban areas quite well.

Transport

  • Walking: Walking around the Moldovan towns is generally pleasant and practical. Most city centres are pedestrian-friendly with sidewalks, green spaces, and decent lighting. Once you move toward suburbs, roads and pavements get narrower and less well maintained, so expect some uneven surfaces and fewer crosswalks.
  • Cycling: Cycling is growing in popularity in Moldova, especially in the capital. There are some dedicated bike lanes and more bike-friendly zones popping up. But don’t expect a full cycling infrastructure: traffic can be busy and roads can be far from smooth.
  • Public Transport: Chisinau has buses, trolleybuses, and minibuses that run from about 5:30AM until 11:00PM. All have low fares, paid in cash onboard. Minibuses are faster and more frequent but less regulated. Google Maps works fine in Moldova.
  • Train: Moldova’s train network is limited. There are domestic routes (e.g. Chisinau ↔ Ungheni) and international lines to Romania and Ukraine. Trains are slower than buses and often more basic in comfort, but for longer distances or scenic trips they’re a viable option.
  • Taxi: Taxis are everywhere in Moldovan cities. Ride-hailing apps (Yandex, Hip, Letz, Teleport) are widely used in Chisinau and give you upfront prices. Street taxis also work but always agree on price first or insist meter is on. At the airport expect higher fares.
  • Car Rental: Car rental is possible in the bigger towns, but expect older vehicles, sometimes sketchy insurance, and often no roadside help in rural areas. Roads between major cities are okay, but once you leave the main highways, surfaces can become rough and navigation less straightforward.
  • Airport: Chisinau International Airport (RMO) is about 12km from the city centre. Trolleybus #30 connects to the airport.
  • Hitchhiking: Hitchhiking is far less common in Moldova than in some East European countries. In rural areas, people may be friendly and helpful if you explain your route and ask politely. Yet, it’s not a widespread custom.
